Workshop Reading of The Merchant of Venice
Bare Bodkin Theater Company will be holding a workshop reading of Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice to begin the development process of Ben Nissan's senior Drama capstone project, which will culminate in a full production next spring. This production is focused on reclaiming the Jewish narrative of the play, and of Shylock as a character in particular, seeking to approach the following questions: How can we advocate for Shylock's basic humanity? How can we ground him in an honest, fully realized Jewish life? And how can we draw a direct historical line between the events of this play and recent surges in antisemitism around the world? We hope that this production, in collaboration with Hillel, will help raise all our voices as members of Tufts' Jewish community. The workshop will be held on Friday, April 14th, at noon at Hillel. If you are interested in reading for this workshop, please email Bare Bodkin's workshop coordinator, Nick Cicchetti, at Nicholas.Cicchetti@tufts.edu!
