DESCRIPTION:In Person at Tufts Hillel \n\n\n\nEvery other week this fall\, sit down with someone whose life has been impacted by genocide\, from survivors to their children to those who commit themselves to preventing future genocides. \n\n\n\nDinner will be served! \n\n\n\nAbout Liliane Pari Umuhoza:  \n\n\n\nLiliane is a human rights advocate. She was born and raised in Rwanda and graduated from Juniata College\, in Pennsylvania with a B.A in Peace and Conflict studies. Liliane uses her life experience of surviving the Genocide against the Tutsi and her work with non-profits to promote peace and summon global dialogue and actions against human right abuses. She is the founder of ” Women Genocide Survivors Retreat ” a program supporting women survivors of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda and works as a project officer for Foundation Rwanda in Kigali. Liliane has spoken at events related to peace-building\, human rights\, and women empowerment at universities\, the UN\, the Embassy of Rwanda in Washington DC\, the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City\, and many others.

DESCRIPTION:Students and faculty members will meet weekly to discuss readings from Benny Morris’ 1948: A History of the First Arab-Israeli War and Yossi Klein HaLevi’s Letters to my Palestinian Neighbor. We will allot time during the meetings for participants to read the texts that we will be discussing\, so no outside reading is necessary.All reading materials will be provided\, and discussions will be run so that weekly attendance is not necessary to participate—feel free to join us whenever you can! Fellowship meetings will be weekly on Wednesday at 8:00 pm. \n\n\n\nWhat is Gesher? \n\n\n\nSince October 7th\, we’ve felt many things—grief\, mourning\, anger\, fear\, confusion. One thing has been missing: dialogue. Gesher: Building Bridges is a new Tufts Hillel initiative aimed at bridging the divides within the Jewish community. \n\n\n\nGesher fellows will study diverse perspectives on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a focus on seeing the other and building bridges\, particularly amid the ongoing war. We will delve into important themes\, including identity\, diaspora\, humanization\, and challenging hate. This is a student-led fellowship designed for all students—Jewish and allies alike—committed to shared learning\, open to new experiences\, and respectful toward diverse voices.  \n\n\n\nAs a fellows you will have the opportunity to explore your own views in a challenging\, tolerant\, and respectful environment. The fellowship will feature a highly subsidized trip over Patriots’ Day Weekend to hear insightful speakers and come together in pursuit of collective healing. \n\n\n\nDates and logistical details: \n\n\n\nWeekly seminars over 10 weeks beginning 2/7/24 \n\n\n\nWednesdays at 8:00pm. \n\n\n\nImmersive travel experience over over Patriots’ Day Weekend \n\n\n\nApply now!
