DESCRIPTION:Every other week this fall\, this conversation series offers students the chance to hear from peers about their families’ histories with genocide and help share their stories. \n\n\n\nListen to Sophie Dorf-Kamienny speak about her grandparents’ experience in the Holocaust and the importance of carrying on their legacy. \n\n\n\nJoin the Cummings/Hillel Program for Holocaust & Genocide Education on Wednesday\, 10/4 at 7:30 p.m. for the first installment of its fall speaker series. Over dinner in the sukkah (an outdoor hut constructed for the Jewish holiday of Sukkot)\, hear from Sophie Dorf-Kamienny A25 about her family’s story of surviving the Holocaust and discuss the importance of intergenerational storytelling. Lwam co-founded Stand With Tigray\, a non-profit organization that advocates for the people of Tigray in Ethiopia and beyond. She majored in computer science at Tufts and currently works as a software engineer.

DESCRIPTION:In Person at Tufts Hillel \n\n\n\n\n\nEvery other week this fall\, sit down with someone whose life has been impacted by genocide\, from survivors to their children to those who commit themselves to preventing future genocides. \n\n\n\nSign up here \n\n\n\nDinner will be served! \n\n\n\nAbout Karen Kirsten \n\n\n\nA former internet executive\, Karen Kirsten is an Australian-American writer who lectures on the topics of hatred and reconciliation around the world. Raised in Australia by a Holocaust survivor mother and grandparents who silenced her questions about extermination camps\, Karen lived among refugees who were hiding horrible secrets to reinvent themselves. AfterKaren discovered the grandmother she loved was in fact her mother’s aunt\, she traveled the globe to uncover her family’s hidden past. She found the heroes who saved her mother and then facilitated awarding them Righteous Among The Nations medals. Karen’s Narratively essay\, Searching For The Nazi Who Saved My Mother’s Life\, was nominated for Best American Essays. She’s also written for Salon\, The Week\, Więż in Poland\, The Jerusalem Post\, and Boston’s NPR. \n\n\n\nAs an educator for Facing History Facing Ourselves\, Karen recognizes the importance of discussing students’ most frequent question: “Was the SS officer who saved your mother a ‘good’ Nazi?”
